The Phoenix City Council Takes on the Digital Divide

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Councilwoman Laura Pastor of District 4 in Phoenix has spearheaded efforts to bridge the digital divide that emerged among students during the crisis. This gap highlighted the stark reality that without internet access, many students were left unable to participate in remote learning.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Phoenix City Council unanimously approved the allocation of funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to provide free high-speed internet access to low-income communities and schools. The council aims to ensure that all students have the necessary connectivity to thrive in today’s digital world.

During a recent council meeting, Councilwoman Kesha Hodge Washington shared a shocking statistic: 25% of students in Phoenix lack access to the internet. This statistic underscores the pressing need to address the digital divide in urban areas, where connectivity remains a challenge for many families.

While it is unclear whether this statistic pertains specifically to Phoenix or the country as a whole, national research has shown that a significant portion of school-aged children lack broadband access. In Arizona alone, over 335,000 students and nearly 5,000 teachers face inadequate internet connectivity.

To tackle this issue, Phoenix has partnered with various organizations, including Phoenix Union, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, and local schools, to identify areas in need of internet access. Through the Digital Education Connection Canopy (DECC), the city aims to provide high-speed internet infrastructure in underserved communities.

Councilwoman Pastor emphasized the importance of closing the digital divide to promote fairness and equity in education. The city’s Community Wireless Network Project is a step towards ensuring that all students have equal access to educational opportunities.
