The Justice Served in the Pit Bull Mauling Case
In a tragic incident in San Antonio, Ramon Najera and his wife, Juanita, were attacked by two loose pit bulls while visiting relatives. The brutal attack resulted in Ramon’s death, and the dog owners, Christian Moreno and Abilene Schnieder, faced justice for their negligence.
A judge sentenced Moreno to 18 years in prison and Schnieder to 15 years, along with a $5,000 fine and a ban on owning dogs in the future. The couple was arrested after the mauling took place in a west-side neighborhood. The horrific scene witnessed Ramon Najera being dragged and covered in blood.
Both Moreno and Schnieder pleaded guilty to the charges in August after reaching a plea deal with the prosecution. The sentencing was preceded by a punishment hearing where arguments were heard.
Judge Velia J. Meza of the 226th Criminal District Court oversaw the proceedings. The prosecution sought the maximum sentence of 20 years, and family members of Najera gave emotional victims-impact statements after the sentencing was announced.
Juanita Najera spoke about the impact her husband’s death had on her and her children. She highlighted the financial and emotional support her husband provided, which her son had to take over after his father’s tragic demise.
Raymond Najera, their son, expressed his anger and disappointment towards Moreno and Schnieder in court, calling them “unremorseful, disgusting individuals” and highlighting the horror their negligence with the dogs caused.
The couple was taken into custody immediately after the sentencing, marking a sense of closure and justice served in the heartbreaking case. Watch the full victims’ impact statements below.
