Remembering Howard the Rhinoceros at Phoenix Zoo

There was a heavy heart at the Phoenix Zoo as news broke that Howard, one of their beloved southern white rhinoceroses, had passed away. Howard, a resident at the zoo since 2020, came from a zoo in Florida and quickly became a favorite among visitors and staff alike.

Unfortunately, Howard was battling a protracted and progressive neurological condition that no longer responded to treatment. The zoo’s veterinarians and caretakers made the difficult decision to euthanize him. Howard was also suffering from meningitis and sepsis, with further pathology tests underway to provide more insight into his illnesses.

Described as an easy-going rhino who loved interacting with his keepers, Howard leaves behind a legacy of joy and connection. The Hoofstock team at the Phoenix Zoo expressed their deep sadness at his passing, emphasizing how much he will be missed.

Howard’s journey to Phoenix Zoo was a special one, and he quickly became a top attraction for guests. His gentle demeanor and playful nature endeared him to all who knew him. Now, as the zoo mourns his loss, they continue to care for LouLou, the remaining female southern white rhino.

It is with great sadness we share the news of Howard’s passing. He will be deeply missed.
