Welcome to Kim’s Kafe: Understanding the Dress Code Debate

Kim’s Kafe, a popular restaurant in Greensboro, North Carolina, has sparked a heated debate with its recently posted dress code. The signs on the front door explicitly state rules like ‘no skimpy clothes of any kind,’ ‘no crop tops,’ ‘do not enter if you have on shorts,’ and ‘no leggings.’ The controversy has garnered attention not only in the local community but also on social media, with over 4,000 comments and 700 shares on Facebook.

David Daggett of Daggett Shuler Law weighed in on the issue, explaining that business owners have the right to establish dress codes as long as they are not discriminatory. According to Title Seven of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is illegal to discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. However, businesses can set rules regarding attire, payment methods, and even cell phone usage within their premises.

“Business owners have the right to define the standards of their establishment, whether it’s about clothing or other rules,” Daggett explained. “While most businesses aim to attract customers, they also maintain the integrity and character of their brand.”

Ultimately, as a customer, you have the power to choose where you spend your money. If you disagree with a business’s policies, you can opt to take your patronage elsewhere.

So, the next time you visit Kim’s Kafe or any other establishment with a dress code, remember that it’s not just about fashion – it’s about respecting the owner’s vision for their business.
