The Brave Fight of Valley Firefighter Scott Leatham Against Rare Cancer
At just 38 years old, Scott Leatham, a dedicated Valley firefighter, finds himself in the ICU battling a rare cancer, mere weeks after his diagnosis.
Chris Hammond, a childhood best friend of Leatham since they were 12, reminisces that Leatham’s lifelong dream was to be a firefighter. Hammond speaks fondly of Leatham’s dedication and recent promotion to Captain, highlighting the pride Leatham takes in serving others.
Another friend, Doug Myers, admires Leatham’s unwavering commitment to the community, noting his constant dedication and selfless service as a firefighter.
Last month, Leatham received the devastating news of being diagnosed with NUT Carcinoma, an aggressive and rare form of cancer. While studies show firefighters are at a higher risk of cancer, it remains uncertain if Leatham’s diagnosis is connected to his profession.
Despite undergoing chemotherapy and numerous hospital visits over the past few weeks, Leatham’s condition worsened, leading him to the ICU. His close friend Hammond rushed to be by his side, witnessing firsthand the rollercoaster of emotions and challenges they now face.
Myers shares the emotional turmoil of seeing a friend and fellow firefighter in need, emphasizing the strength and support needed to navigate such tough times. Leatham’s wife and two children remain by his side, taking each day as it comes.
As Leatham fights for his life, friends and the community rally around him, offering support and prayers. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with the family’s medical expenses, demonstrating the power of unity in times of adversity.
