The Truth Behind the Fake Editorial on Kamala Harris
In today’s digital age, misinformation can easily spread like wildfire, especially during election season. Recently, a post titled “The History of Kamala Harris” has been making the rounds on social media and through email forwards. This post claims to be authored by Marine Corps General, Maj. Gen. Geoffrey B. Higginbotham, and makes shocking allegations about Vice President Harris’ supposed communist ties.
Despite its widespread circulation, it’s essential to separate fact from fiction. The VERIFY team looked into the authenticity of this post and found that it is entirely fabricated. Maj. Gen. Higginbotham has confirmed that he did not write the article and that his identity was falsely used to lend credibility to the misleading content.
So, where did this misleading text originate?
Interestingly, early versions of this article were attributed to different authors, such as retired Navy captain Joseph R. John. John, who runs a political action committee called Combat Veterans for Congress, has published opinion pieces with similar claims about Kamala Harris. However, neither of his articles mentioned Maj. Gen. Higginbotham.
It’s worth noting that the only source cited in these posts is right-wing conspiracy theorist Trevor Loudon, who has a history of spreading false information about Harris. Despite the various iterations of this article circulating online, there is no factual basis to the claims made about Vice President Harris.
What Can We Learn from This?
It’s crucial to exercise caution and verify information before sharing it, especially when it comes to sensitive political topics. In today’s digital landscape, misinformation can easily be manipulated and circulated to deceive readers. By staying vigilant and seeking out reputable sources, we can combat the spread of false information and uphold the integrity of our democratic processes.
