The Watch Fire On San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation
Wildfires are a common occurrence in Arizona, but the recent Watch Fire on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation has been particularly devastating. The fire, driven by high winds, has already torched approximately 1,100 acres of land, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
The fire, which started in the Seven Mile District on Thursday afternoon, has caused extensive damage to at least four homes in the area. The blaze has forced the evacuation of several neighborhoods, including TC Alley, China Town, Peridot Heights, and Old/New Moonbase. Evacuation centers have been set up at San Carlos High School and the Bingo Hall at Apache Gold Casino.
Despite the efforts of fire resources and first responders, the Watch Fire remains 0% contained, and the cause of the blaze is still unknown. Authorities have ordered a Complex Incident Management Team (CIMT) to handle the situation.
Preparing for Wildfires: The Wildfire Go-Kit
Residents living in wildfire-prone areas are urged to have an emergency supplies kit ready in case they need to evacuate their homes. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends storing emergency supplies, such as water, food, first-aid kits, and important documents, in a portable, waterproof container for easy access during emergencies.
Some items to include in a Wildfire Go-Kit are:
- Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
- Battery-powered or hand-cranked radio and NOAA weather radio
- Dust mask or cotton T-shirt for air filtration
- Waterproof matches and a change of clothing
- Signal flare for emergencies
The full NFPA checklist of supplies can be found here. In the event of a wildfire or other natural disaster, affected individuals in Arizona can seek assistance from the American Red Cross by calling 1-800-842-7349.
