Welcome to the New El Mirage City Council: Residents First!Stay Up to Speed

After the July 31 election, the El Mirage City Council saw a major shift in power. Three council members who had voted to approve new city buildings were ousted in favor of a united ticket of council members who opposed these projects.

In 2023, voters rejected a bond measure that aimed to expand city hall, the police department, and build a new fire station and city court building. Despite this, the council moved forward with purchasing land for “future growth needs” and earmarked funds for these projects in the capital improvement budget.

Residents were outraged, leading to a heated council meeting where council member Anita Nortan-McDaniel spoke out against the projects and the land purchase, noting that the land was originally meant for the bond projects.

The newly-elected council members, Ryan Eldridge, Jacqueline Parsons, and Scottie Gentry, all campaigned against the new city buildings and were elected under the banner of “Residents First.” They were determined to end what they perceived as wasteful spending on unnecessary projects.

On election day, these three candidates emerged victorious, unseating council members who supported the controversial projects. The outgoing council members declined to comment on their defeat.

The new council members are set to be sworn in on December 3, signaling a new chapter for El Mirage with a council dedicated to putting residents’ interests first.
