Exploring the Valley of the Sun

“The Valley” refers to the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, the largest metropolitan area in the Southwest. It encompasses various major cities such as Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Tempe, and more.

Divided into the East Valley and West Valley, the region is home to a combined population of 4,845,832 people as of the 2020 United States Census, making it the 11th largest metropolitan area in the country.

Maricopa County: A Hub of Activity

Maricopa County, the fourth-largest county in the United States with a population of 4,485,414 people according to the 2020 Census, plays a central role in Arizona. Encompassing 9,224 square miles, the county is larger than several U.S. states and is home to a significant portion of Arizona’s population.

Featuring an extensive park system spanning approximately 120,000 acres of open space, Maricopa County offers residents and visitors a wealth of outdoor recreational opportunities, including trails, nature centers, and campgrounds. The county seat, Phoenix, also serves as the state capital and the fifth most populous city in the U.S.

Named after the Maricopa Native American Tribe, the county continues to be a vibrant and diverse hub of activity in Arizona.
