Unfortunate news hit the Arizona Cardinals as rookie defensive lineman Darius Robinson suffered a calf injury during practice, potentially sidelining him for the start of the 2024 season. This comes on the heels of wide receiver Zay Jones’ suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the injury is considered a multi-week setback, with the possibility of Robinson beginning the season on Injured Reserve. Head coach Jonathan Gannon confirmed the news and stated that Robinson was undergoing imaging for further evaluation.
The Cardinals’ first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Robinson’s injury adds uncertainty to the team’s defensive lineup. However, the new rule for the 2024 season allows for a potential return from IR without impacting the 53-man roster, offering a silver lining amid the setback.
If placed on IR, Robinson will have to miss at least four games, with a potential return as early as Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers. Despite the setback, the Cardinals remain hopeful for Robinson’s recovery as they gear up to face the Buffalo Bills in their season opener on Sept. 8.
