The Diamondbacks’ Six-Game Win Streak Ends on a Walk-Off Error
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ season-high six-game winning streak came to an abrupt end after a costly error by Jake McCarthy allowed the Tampa Bay Rays to secure a walk-off victory.
In a thrilling ninth inning, Jonny DeLuca scored on an error, leading the Rays to a 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks and snapping their impressive winning streak. DeLuca drew a walk and scored from first base on a misplayed ball by McCarthy, resulting in the game-winning run.
Despite a valiant effort from Corbin Carroll, who hit a game-tying two-run homer in the ninth off Rays closer Pete Fairbanks, the Diamondbacks fell short in the end. Josh Lowe’s two-run single in the eighth inning against Ryan Thompson had put the Rays ahead 4-2.
Arizona, who have been resilient despite injuries, got early runs from Joc Pederson and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. The team has been on an impressive run, winning 20 of their last 26 games since the All-Star break.
In a standout performance, Tampa Bay’s Ryan Pepiot returned to the mound after a hiatus due to a knee infection, pitching effectively against the Diamondbacks. On the other side, Ryne Nelson delivered a solid outing for Arizona, showcasing his pitching skills.
Dylan Carlson played a key role for the Rays, hitting a homer and contributing an RBI single. Eugenio Suárez had some eventful at-bats, including a controversial call in the second inning.
