Stay Cool in the Arizona Heat

The scorching heat in Arizona can be dangerous, but staying cool is essential for your health and well-being. With extreme heat warnings in place across the state, it’s crucial to have access to cooling centers and hydration stations.

Maricopa County has expanded its network of cooling centers and hydration stations to help those in need during the hot summer months. These cooling centers are available throughout the Valley, with most located in and around Central Phoenix. To find a cooling center near you, visit https://hrn.azmag.gov/ or call 211 for assistance.

It’s important to note that these heat relief sites will be open from May 1 to Sept. 30. Last summer, over 640 people in Maricopa County died from heat-related illnesses, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The City of Phoenix has extended the hours of their cooling centers this summer and added five new centers, including two overnight facilities at Burton Barr Library and Senior Opportunities West. These centers have a capacity of 50 people each and are crucial for individuals seeking relief from the heat.

Since opening the extended hour and overnight facilities on May 1, the City of Phoenix has already seen nearly 4,000 visits and expects even higher volumes as the temperatures rise.
