Sad News Along the Colorado River

A recent tragedy struck a group of travelers making their way along the Colorado River. The peaceful journey turned into a nightmare as Patrick Horton, a 59-year-old man from Colorado, was discovered lifeless by his companions during the 10th day of their non-commercial trip down the river. The heartbreaking incident took place near river mile 137, leaving the group in shock and sadness.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office, along with the National Park Service, is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Horton’s passing. The details surrounding his death remain undisclosed, leaving many questions unanswered.

Exploring the Valley

“The Valley” is a nickname for the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, known for being the largest metropolitan area in the Southwest. This dynamic region comprises various major cities, including Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale, Surprise, Peoria, and more. The cities are divided into the “East Valley” and “West Valley,” depending on their proximity to Phoenix.

As of the 2020 United States Census, the Valley’s cities collectively house a population of 4,845,832, making it the 11th largest metropolitan area in the nation, closely following Boston and Atlanta.

Discovering Maricopa County’s Magnitude

Maricopa County, the fourth largest county in the United States by population, is home to 4,485,414 individuals according to the 2020 Census. Encompassing around 63% of Arizona’s population, the county spans 9,224 square miles, surpassing the size of seven U.S. states.

Remarkably, Maricopa County boasts one of the country’s largest park systems, comprising an estimated 120,000 acres of open space parks featuring miles of trails, nature centers, and campgrounds. Phoenix serves as the county seat, state capital, and the fifth most populous city in the U.S., showcasing the county’s vibrant essence.

The county derives its name from the Maricopa, or Piipaash, Native American Tribe, honoring their rich cultural heritage and deep-rooted connection to the land.
