Arizona Motor Vehicle Division Coding Error Impacts 120,000 Voters
A coding oversight glitch within the Motor Vehicles Division in Arizona has potentially impacted 120,000 individuals, doubling the initial estimate of affected voters.
New information from the Arizona Secretary of State revealed that an additional 120,000 Arizonans may have been affected by the “data coding oversight” within the MVD and the Arizona voter registration database.
The breakdown of the new data shows approximately 79,000 Republicans, 61,000 Democrats, and 76,000 voters from other parties, totaling around 218,000 individuals impacted by the error.
The Arizona Supreme Court ruled on September 20 that those affected by the oversight issue can still participate in the upcoming election, including the newly identified 120,000 voters.
Election officials will be reaching out to the affected individuals following the general election to ensure their voting rights are upheld.
The main issue stems from the misclassification of voters with driver’s licenses issued before 1996, as Arizona requires residents to provide proof of citizenship to vote in state and local elections.
Efforts are underway as staff and experts from the Secretary of State’s Office collaborate with the MVD to identify any additional voters who may have been impacted by the coding error.
