Is Jerry Sheridan Above the Law? Civil Rights Attorney Criticizes Comments
As candidates for county sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona gear up for a second debate, civil rights attorney Christine Wee is speaking out against recent comments made by Republican candidate Jerry Sheridan. During the first debate, Sheridan boasted about refusing a judge’s order regarding the training of deputies, hinting that he would do the same in the future.
In response to Sheridan’s remarks, Wee, a Senior Staff Attorney at the ACLU of Arizona, expressed her concerns, stating, “First and foremost, this tells us Jerry Sheridan believes he is above the rule of law, that orders will be disregarded again in the future.”
Sheridan, who served as Joe Arpaio’s top chief for seven years, has a history of defying court orders and was found in civil contempt of court during a civil rights case. This case resulted in court-ordered reforms costing the county over $350 million, with Sheridan now on the Arizona Brady List for officers with credibility issues.
If elected, Sheridan would oversee the implementation of court orders that are still unresolved to this day. Wee believes his comments indicate a willingness to defy the court once again, a sentiment shared by many who have followed Sheridan’s career closely.
Following the first debate, Sheridan attempted to walk back his statements, claiming he did not remember saying he defied the judge’s orders. However, his opponent, Democrat Tyler Kamp, seized on the opportunity to highlight the stark differences between the two candidates, emphasizing the importance of upholding the law.
The second debate is set for Wednesday at 6 p.m. and will be available for viewing on the 12News app and YouTube channel. Stay tuned for more updates on this critical race.
