The Burning QuestionWhat the Sources Say

In a historic ruling on May 30, Trump became the first former American president to be convicted of felony crimes after a New York jury found him guilty on all 34 charges in his hush money trial.

The Burning Question

Many readers have asked whether Trump can still vote in Florida after his felony conviction in New York. The answer is yes. Despite his conviction, Trump’s sentencing date has been postponed until after the November election, allowing him to exercise his right to vote in Florida.

What the Sources Say

This is true.

Florida’s voting rights policies regarding individuals with out-of-state felony convictions defers to the rules of the state where the person was convicted. In Trump’s case, New York’s rules apply, and in New York, individuals convicted of a felony are only prohibited from voting while incarcerated.

According to the New York State Board of Elections, individuals convicted of a felony in New York can still vote if they do not serve time in prison or are released for any reason, including parole.

Michael McDonald, a political science professor at the University of Florida, states that Trump’s voting rights will likely remain intact until his sentencing is finalized after the appeals process.

The Manhattan Judge recently postponed Trump’s sentencing until Nov. 26 to avoid any appearance of interference in the upcoming presidential election where Trump is a candidate. This delay allows Trump to cast his vote in Florida on Election Day.

Despite the felony conviction, Trump’s ability to vote in Florida remains unaffected, thanks to the postponement of his sentencing date.
