Gavin Creel, a beloved Broadway star known for his Tony Award-winning performance in “Hello, Dolly!” as well as his roles in “Hair” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” has passed away at the age of 48. His death on Monday was due to a rare and aggressive form of cancer called metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma.
Creel’s illustrious career included a wide range of roles on both Broadway and the West End. He captivated audiences as Dr. Pomatter in Sara Bareilles’ musical “Waitress” and received critical acclaim for his portrayal in “The Book of Mormon,” earning him an Olivier Award.
One of his most notable performances was as Cornelius Hackl in the 2017 revival of “Hello, Dolly!” alongside legendary stars Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce. He also showcased his talents on screen, playing the singing waiter Bill in the films “Eloise at the Plaza” and “Eloise at Christmastime” alongside Julie Andrews.
In 2021, Creel took on a new challenge in Ryan Murphy’s miniseries “American Horror Stories” and his captivating solo concert was featured in the premiere episode of PBS’s “Stars Onstage at Westport Country Playhouse.”
Creel leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. He is survived by his mother, Nancy Clemens Creel, father James William Creel, sisters Heather Elise Creel and Allyson Jo Creel, and his partner, Alex Temple Ward.
