The ASU Mechanics of Democracy Laboratory: Rebuilding Trust in Arizona’s Elections
When it comes to the integrity of election results, public trust is essential. In response to recent events where election results were denied, Arizona State University has stepped up to the plate with the creation of the Mechanics of Democracy Laboratory (MODL).
Heading this initiative is Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates, whose dedication to restoring faith in Arizona’s elections is evident. Upon his retirement, Gates will be leading the research efforts at MODL, aiming to correct misconceptions and disinformation through public education.
During the tumultuous 2020 and 2022 elections in Arizona, Gates and other election officials faced threats and scrutiny. This hostile environment prompted Gates to not seek reelection, but rather channel his energy into rebuilding trust through the MODL.
The establishment of MODL reflects the urgent need to address the growing distrust in local elections and combat false allegations against election administrators. This laboratory will serve as a hub for election-related resources for the public and offer training opportunities for students interested in election administration careers.
