The Legacy of Hank the Ballpark Pup
In 2014, a stray dog named Hank captured the hearts of baseball fans when he wandered into the Milwaukee Brewers’ spring training facility in Maryvale. Hank’s story began on February 17, 2014, when he was found at what is now known as American Family Fields of Phoenix at 51st Avenue and Indian School Road. He spent spring training with the Brewers, becoming a beloved part of the team and interacting with fans who traveled to the Valley from the Midwest.
During his time with the Brewers, Hank became a fixture in the clubhouse, participated in the famous sausage race wearing his own hot dog costume, and helped raise money for humane societies in Arizona and Wisconsin. He was even welcomed into the homes of Brewers players and staff members, becoming a cherished member of the team.
After spring training ended, Hank was flown to Milwaukee and made a special appearance at the Brewers’ Opening Day in 2014. He was given his own doghouse at American Family Field in Milwaukee, solidifying his place in Brewers history.
In 2016, there was a brief controversy regarding Hank’s identity, but the Brewers clarified the situation and used the opportunity to raise more funds for charity. Throughout his life, Hank was adopted by Brewers Chief Operating Officer Marti Wronski and his family, who announced his passing on September 12, 2024.
Hank brought joy to countless baseball fans and shone a spotlight on animal rescue efforts. To honor his legacy, the Brewers and the Wronski family are encouraging fans to make donations to the Wisconsin Humane Society or MADACC (Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission).
