The 9-Year-Old Yo-Yo Sensation Taking ASU by Storm
When the ASU Sun Devils triumphed over Wyoming in week 1, it was not just a victory for the team but also for a talented 9-year-old named Christian Harper. Christian’s incredible yo-yo skills captivated audiences on national TV and even made an appearance on the jumbotron at the stadium.
Christian shared his excitement, saying, “It was so cool, I was so excited. Yo-yoing is fun. You can bring it anywhere.”
His impromptu performance went viral during the game, earning him the nickname “yo-yo kid.” His mom, Mandee Friberg, was astonished by the response. She shared, “I had people tag me on Instagram posts and text me that they saw him on TV. Then he got the nickname yo-yo kid, so that was really cute.”
During the game, the crowd even started chanting for him in the 4th quarter. Christian’s dedication to yo-yoing is evident, as he practices regularly and is the number one in his age group in Arizona, frequenting the local Yo-Yo factory in Chandler.
Christian’s mom jokingly mentioned his obsession, saying, “Sometimes he can’t put the thing down. I’ll take him grocery shopping with me, and he’s down the aisles yo-yoing. I’m like, ‘little busy right now. We got to put it in the pocket.’ He’s putting a whole lot of hard work.”
Despite his passion for yo-yoing, Christian follows two golden rules at home: don’t break anything and don’t yo-yo into his baby brother. He’s careful but sometimes ends up with a few bruises, according to his mom.
Looking ahead, Christian plans to showcase his skills at every game, entertaining fans at tailgates and possibly even on the field. His journey as the yo-yo sensation at ASU is just beginning, and he’s ready to keep the crowds entertained with his amazing talent.
