Arizona State University recently announced significant changes in response to a loss of $24 million in funding.
Due to this funding shortfall, ASU will be implementing a “tuition surcharge” for all on-campus students.
The surcharge, amounting to approximately $350, will be added to full-time students’ tuition in the spring of 2025.
Additionally, about 800 fewer students will be able to benefit from the Arizona Teachers Academy program as a result of the funding cut.
The ASU Lake Havasu Center will also cease operations due to the financial changes.
ASU President Michael M. Crow expressed disappointment in the lack of state investment in higher education, stating that ASU cannot be expected to expand education opportunities without adequate state support.
State budget cuts affected all three public universities in Arizona, leading to a 3.45% reduction in funding.
According to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, state appropriations for higher education in Arizona decreased by about 2.8% between fiscal years 2023 and 2024.
