ASU Welcomes Record Number of First-Year Students

A record number 9,100+ Arizonans are heading into their first year at Arizona State University (ASU).

PHOENIX — It’s move-in day for Arizona State’s downtown Phoenix campus where hundreds of students flooded into Gordon Commons.

“Nervous, excited, every single emotion all at the same time,” first-year journalism student Simone Woodly said. “Recently it hit me. I was crying feeling so emotional knowing I was going to miss my parents. But now I’m so excited to start this new chapter in my life.”

Students and parents felt many emotions as the new Sun Devils started their college adventure.

New Sun Devils were coming from far places like Georgia and Virginia. But, a record number 9,170 Arizonans decided to make ASU their next chapter with 41,000 total first-year students.

Even the downtown dean of students Dr. Robert Dotson is entering his first year, looking to bring some extra flavor.

“I want to add a little spice,” Dean Dotson said as he moved from Memphis, TN. “A larger environment, but still feeling and going to be passionate about engaging with students in a very different way.”

And lots of emotions for the parents.

“Amazing. We’re excited for her,” Rich Woodly said. “She’s ready to go. She’s been dreaming about this and now it’s coming true.”

Here are the move-in dates for all ASU campuses:

  • Downtown Phoenix: Aug. 15-17
  • Polytechnic: Aug. 17
  • Tempe: Aug. 17-18
  • West Valley: Aug. 17-18

The first day of classes for ASU is Aug. 22.
