Welcome to our blog where we share stories that touch our hearts. Today, we are saddened to report the tragic loss of one of our own, Kara Welsh, a national gymnastics champion.
Located in Whitewater, Wisconsin, near the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus, Kara was a 21-year-old student majoring in management in the school’s College of Business and Economics. Tragically, she was fatally shot in her apartment on Friday night, as reported by the Whitewater police.
The suspect, a 23-year-old man known to Kara, was arrested at the scene and is currently being held at the Walworth County Jail. The exact details leading to the shooting have not been disclosed by the police but it is known that the two individuals were involved in an altercation.
Authorities are considering charging the suspect with first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by the use of a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct while armed. The investigation is ongoing, with no further information released at this time.
Kara, hailing from Plainfield, Illinois, was a shining star on the Warhawk gymnastics team and was the reigning individual national titleholder on vault at the NCAA Division III championships. Her loss is deeply felt by the university community, and Chancellor Corey King has urged everyone to come together to support one another during this difficult time.
In light of this tragedy, the university is providing counseling and additional support to Kara’s teammates and coaches. The school’s gymnastics team expressed their sorrow on Facebook, stating, “Our hearts are broken with the tragic loss of one of our own.”
As we mourn the loss of Kara Welsh, we honor her memory and spirit, remembering her as a talented athlete and a beloved member of our community. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and teammates during this challenging time.
