Tragedy struck in the Grand Canyon when Chenoa Nickerson, 33, was swept away by flood waters on August 22 while she was with her husband. Three days later, after an intense search effort, her body has been found.
The Havasu Canyon area in the Grand Canyon was the scene of the unfortunate incident. According to National Park authorities, Nickerson was with her husband when a flash flood hit the area, tragically sweeping her away while her husband was rescued by a group of rafters.
Over the past three days, search crews tirelessly combed the area to find Nickerson. Finally, her body was discovered about 20 miles downriver from where she was last seen. The Grand Canyon National Parks Service confirmed that her body was located at river mile 176 on the Colorado River, downstream from where she went missing at river mile 157.3.
Following the discovery, Grand Canyon National Park rangers retrieved her body and transferred it to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation into her death.
The incident led to the evacuation of more than 100 people from Havasu Canyon by the Arizona National Guard. As a result, the area, including the Havasu Falls, remains closed indefinitely as per the Havasupai Tribal Council.
