The Arizona Supreme Court Clears the Way for Voters to Decide on Abortion Rights
Exciting news from Arizona as the state’s Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of a 200-word summary that abortion advocates used to collect signatures for a ballot measure. This decision paves the way for voters to have a say in the constitutional right to an abortion.
Under the measure, abortions would be permitted until an embryo or fetus could survive outside the womb, typically around 24 weeks. There are exceptions for later-term abortions to safeguard the mother’s life or physical and mental health.
The ruling, which comes just before a Thursday ballot printing deadline, was met with opposition from groups like Arizona Right to Life. However, the court rejected claims that the petition summary was misleading or failed to mention the potential overturning of existing abortion laws.
Arizona for Abortion Access, the organization behind the initiative, celebrated the ruling as a “huge win” and pledged to rally voters in support of the measure. They are confident that Arizona voters will establish a fundamental right to abortion in the state once and for all.
The Arizona secretary of state’s office recently certified over 577,000 signatures, well above the threshold required to put the question before voters. This decision is part of a larger national conversation around abortion rights following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
