Five talented high school students have been honored with the prestigious title of National Student Poets, each representing a different region of the country.
These remarkable young poets come from diverse backgrounds but share a common passion for community and creative expression. Sofia Kamal from Rancho Solano Preparatory School in Phoenix, Arizona, has been selected as the Southwest representative, while Anya Melchinger from Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu will represent the West. Robert Gao from University Laboratory High School in Champaign, Illinois, will showcase the Midwest region, Marcus Burns from St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont will be the voice of the Northeast, and Nadia Wright from Murrah High School in Jackson, Mississippi, will represent the Southeast.
The National Student Poets Program (NSPP) is a collaboration between the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The program aims to recognize and support young poets by providing them with opportunities to engage with audiences through readings, workshops, and other projects. Each poet will receive a $5,000 award for their exceptional work.
IMLS Acting Director Cyndee Landrum commended the Class of 2024 NSPP poets for their outstanding talent and expressed excitement about their upcoming year of service. The poets will serve as inspiring figures in their communities and help foster a love for the arts among young people.
These young poets draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including their family histories, the beauty of nature, and their personal struggles. Each poet’s work reflects a unique perspective on life and the world around them.
From poignant reflections on family heritage to vivid imagery of the natural world, the poems of these talented young poets offer a glimpse into their souls. Through their words, they explore themes of identity, resilience, and the beauty of human connection.
Join us in celebrating the creativity and passion of these National Student Poets as they embark on a year of service and artistic growth. Their voices will resonate with audiences across the nation, inspiring and uplifting all who have the privilege of experiencing their poetry.
