The Harsh Reality of Human Trafficking: A Teen’s Story
Imagine being just 14 years old and finding yourself in a situation where you are a victim of sex trafficking. This was the harsh reality for a young girl who bravely called Tucson police in 2021 to report her ordeal.
Fast forward to today, and justice has been served. Maurice Alexander, Jr., a 33-year-old man from Memphis, Tennessee, has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for sex trafficking a minor in Arizona. After a jury found him guilty of conspiracy and trafficking charges earlier this year, the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Arizona ensured that justice was served.
The case unfolded when the 14-year-old girl, who had run away from home and ended up in Phoenix, was lured into the world of sex trafficking by Alexander. Through manipulation and control, he forced her to perform commercial sex acts and travel with him across multiple states, including Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado. The victim was not allowed to eat, sleep, or contact friends or family without Alexander’s permission.
This unimaginable situation sheds light on the dark world of human trafficking and the vulnerability of young individuals who fall victim to predators like Alexander. Despite already being a registered sex offender, he continued to exploit innocent lives until justice caught up with him.
