In a recent governing board meeting, the Tolleson Unified School District addressed the issue of students’ cell phone usage in schools. The district is contemplating implementing a ban on cell phones to address the growing distraction they pose to students.

With multiple school districts in Arizona already enforcing similar bans, Tolleson Union High School District is considering joining the initiative. Deputy Superintendent Juan Ceja presented the idea at the board meeting, citing studies that show the potential benefits of such a ban.

Ceja highlighted that banning cell phones could not only eliminate distractions but also contribute to improved mental health, increased social interaction, and better academic performance among students. However, enforcing the ban poses a challenge as students find clever ways to keep their phones with them.

Other districts, such as those in Gilbert, Scottsdale, Apache Junction, and Bullhead City, have already implemented varying degrees of cell phone bans. Some schools only allow students to store their phones in backpacks, while others require phones to be kept in lockers. There are even designated phone zones on some campuses where limited phone usage is permitted.

To address the issue of enforcement, the district is considering portable locking devices that would restrict access to phones while allowing students to carry them. Despite the potential benefits, there is a divide among parents and students regarding the ban. While some parents support the initiative to reduce distractions, students are concerned about not being able to contact their parents in case of emergencies.

The district aims to collaborate with parents, students, and teachers to find a solution that balances the needs of all stakeholders. Although the governing board has not yet voted on the cell phone ban, the topic will be revisited at an upcoming meeting scheduled for Aug. 27, 6 p.m. at the District offices in Tolleson.
