Student Allegedly Attacked at Liberty Elementary School District

Recently, a disturbing incident occurred at Westar Elementary School in the Liberty Elementary School District, where a student allegedly assaulted another student. The victim’s mother, Kristina Guglielmo, is outraged by the attack and is speaking out for stricter bullying consequences.

According to Guglielmo, her 11-year-old son, a sixth grader at Westar Elementary, is still suffering from medical issues more than two weeks after the incident. The attack was unprovoked, and the principal informed Guglielmo that her son was assaulted by an 11-year-old girl who punched him multiple times.

After taking her son to the emergency room due to cuts and swelling on his face, Guglielmo discovered the severity of the attack. Despite the girl being suspended for eight days, Guglielmo believes this punishment is inadequate and is advocating for a zero-tolerance policy for bullying.

Liberty Elementary School District stated that the length of the girl’s suspension was on the higher end of their discipline matrix, as approved by the governing board. However, the incident has raised questions about school safety and disciplinary procedures, leading to the resignation of Governing Board President Michael Todd.

Goodyear Police are currently investigating the incident and have submitted assault charges to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Guglielmo is calling for the girl responsible for her son’s injuries to be expelled, emphasizing the need for a higher level of care and accountability.

As this story unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing bullying in schools and ensuring the safety of all students. Stay informed with the latest updates by downloading the 12News app for local breaking news straight to your phone.
