Atdom Patsalis, sentenced in 2015 on 25 counts of non-violent theft-related crimes in Mohave County, walked out a free man on Thursday. He wasn’t supposed to be released until the year 2300, but the Arizona Department of Corrections office saw him walk out the doors a free man in Central Phoenix.
Patsalis was handed a 292-year prison sentence for his crimes back in 2015. However, after years of effort with the Arizona Justice Project, his sentence was reconsidered. In May, the Arizona Board of Executive Clemency recommended his release, and in July, Governor Katie Hobbs granted the commutation.
A 292-year sentence was deemed excessive by the board and corrected, according to Lindsay Herf, Executive Director at the Arizona Justice Project.
During sentencing in 2015, the judge expressed shock at the severity of the sentence, labeling it as “fairly harsh if not incomprehensible.” Patsalis maintained that his actions were driven by drug addiction, committing non-violent offenses in the pursuit of basic necessities.
Now 31 years old, Patsalis has plans to pursue a career in the automotive industry and corporate real estate. While in prison, he worked on writing music to cope with his circumstances.
The Arizona Justice Project played a crucial role in helping Patsalis keep hope alive during his time behind bars. Now, his story serves as a beacon of hope for other inmates seeking redemption and a second chance at life.
Patsalis hopes to use his experience to advocate for others in similar situations, emphasizing the importance of support and rehabilitation over punitive sentencing for young offenders facing non-violent charges.
