Disturbing Incident in Maricopa County Jail
Justin Avery, who was arrested for sexual assault, was caught on video crawling into a women’s section of a holding area in the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office jail and exposing himself to a woman. The incident took place in the Intake, Transfer and Release facility in Phoenix, Arizona.
Avery was already in custody at the time of the incident, having been arrested in April for assaulting three women near Arizona State University’s Hayden Library. Just days later, he was caught on camera attempting to assault a woman in the jail waiting area.
The video footage shows Avery crawling across the floor, out of sight of an officer who was at a desk in the room, and approaching the woman. He then proceeded to pull down his pants and make inappropriate gestures towards her.
When the officer finally intervened, Avery was restrained and taken into custody. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office expressed their shock and said that such incidents are unprecedented at their facility, which has been open for four years.
Statement from the Sheriff’s Office:
“We’re appalled by inmate Avery’s actions at our ITR facility. This was a unique incident and the first of its kind in four years. We acted immediately to enhance monitoring in blind spots and reviewed our procedures to prevent future occurrences. The safety of staff and inmates is our top priority.”
Avery remains in custody and has been reclassified due to his behavior. Officials are ensuring that such incidents do not happen again in the future.
