Addressing Speeding Issues on Hardy Drive in Tempe, Arizona

Tempe, Ariz. — Residents living on Hardy Drive between Baseline and Guadalupe roads have been facing a dangerous problem with speeding drivers losing control and crashing into homes. This issue reached a breaking point on Sept. 12 when the City of Tempe organized community meetings to address the concerns of the residents.

At the meetings, residents shared their experiences of cars speeding down Hardy Drive and crashing into their homes. Martha Mingua, a long-time resident of Tempe, recounted how two cars ended up in her front yard, narrowly missing her daughter’s bedroom. The situation on Hardy Drive has become increasingly dangerous over the years.

Jeff Broman, another resident, expressed how the impact of a speeding car hitting his house could have been fatal. The glass shattered in every room, highlighting the severity of the problem.

In response to these incidents, city officials presented three potential options to address the speeding issue on Hardy Drive:

  • Installation of medians
  • Removal of center left turn lanes
  • Implementing bicycle and pedestrian enhancements
  • Enhancing landscaping

The city is seeking input from residents to determine the best course of action to make Hardy Drive safer for everyone. Deputy Transportation Sustainability Director Shelly Seyler emphasized the importance of working together with residents to slow down the streets and create a safer environment.
