The Benefits of Super Cooling to Reduce Energy Bills During Summer
As temperatures rise during the summer months, so do electric bills. However, customers across the Valley are finding unique ways to get their costs down. One method is called “super cooling” and those who use it say it helps.
“Super cooling does exist,” explains Mark Mariano, the retail program manager at Champion Air. “It can be beneficial to you if you have the right home.”
Mariano further elaborates that super cooling, or pre-cooling, isn’t new and is quite simple. “You take your air conditioning, and you crank the temperature down to about 60-65 degrees, and you leave it at that overnight.”
APS Customer Technology Manager Sarah Noll also highlights the benefits of super cooling, stating that dropping the thermostat overnight or during the early morning hours when energy rates are lowest allows the whole house to cool down, resulting in reduced energy consumption during peak hours.
Customers have reported significant savings on their electric bills by employing the super cooling method. Noll emphasizes that super cooling typically occurs when solar panels are producing energy, optimizing the use of solar energy in the cooling process.
However, it’s essential to note that super cooling may not be suitable for all homes. Mariano explains, “People do it to save energy and it does save people money. However, it applies to certain people’s homes. If your home isn’t energy efficient, if it’s not insulated enough or your windows and doors aren’t sealed correctly, it won’t work the way it should. If your home is tight like an envelope and secure, it can work really well.”
While super cooling has proven to be effective for many customers, there are differing opinions on its benefits. SRP spokesperson Casaundra Donahoe recommends keeping the thermostat around 78 degrees during peak hours to prevent the AC unit from working harder and consuming more energy.
Despite varying opinions, officials agree that there may be some trial and error involved in implementing super cooling. Therefore, it’s advisable to consult your electric company for more information if you’re considering trying this method.
