Welcome to the 12News Weather Impact Alert Blog!
Get ready, Phoenix! A 12News Weather Impact Alert has been issued for Wednesday and Thursday afternoons as storms are expected to roll through the Valley. The temperatures will cool down due to the cloud cover and moisture in the air, so be prepared for some relief from the heat.
These monsoon storms could bring strong winds, hail, and even flooding, so don’t forget to grab that umbrella from the back of your closet!
WHEN IT’S HAPPENING:
- Wednesday, Aug. 21 and Thursday, Aug. 22 are partial Weather Impact Alert days. Expect storms to start around 3 p.m.
- Thunderstorms will begin near Tucson and Casa Grande, moving northwest towards the Valley.
IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE:
The National Weather Service warns that developing thunderstorms could bring localized heavy rainfall, strong winds, and patches of blowing dust. There is a 30% chance of measurable rainfall in the Valley and a 70% chance in higher elevations. This is a significant monsoon event for northern and eastern parts of Arizona, with temperatures dropping across the state.
A complex of storms is expected to develop in SE AZ this afternoon. Activity will push NW this evening, with some activity expected to survive into the lower deserts, including Phoenix. Additional storms are possible through the overnight & early morning hours on Thursday. #azwx pic.twitter.com/syaD4WJDAM

- At Your House: Seek shelter if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued. Take your pets with you if possible.
- At Your Workplace or School: Stay away from windows if there’s a warning, and avoid large open areas.
- Outside: Find a sturdy building to take cover in if thunderstorms are approaching. Avoid standing under trees.
- In a Vehicle: If you’re in a vehicle during a storm, drive to the nearest shelter when safe to do so.
