Breaking News: 18 Arrested in Yuma-Based Migrant Smuggling Ring
A recent press release from the United States Attorney for the District of Arizona has revealed the arrest and indictment of 18 individuals allegedly involved in a migrant smuggling ring based in Yuma, Arizona. The group, known as La Mesa, was reportedly working for the criminal organization Los Rusos to smuggle hundreds of undocumented noncitizens across the U.S.-Mexico border.
The leader of the group, 24-year-old Carlos Moreno-Serrano, was named in the indictments, along with 17 other individuals who are accused of various conspiracy charges related to harboring and transporting illegal aliens. The group allegedly used force, threats, and intimidation to operate both in the United States and Mexico.
If convicted, the defendants could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 per charge. The arrests followed an investigation into La Mesa’s activities, which included coordinating smuggling events, finding drivers, running stash houses, and managing the transportation of individuals across the border.
