The Rise of Red in Blue Tucson: How Trump’s Visit May Shift the Political Landscape
As former President Donald Trump gears up to visit Tucson, Pima County Republicans are buzzing with excitement, noting significant “cracks” in the traditionally blue stronghold that could signal a potential shift in the upcoming elections.
Despite a hefty loss of nearly 100,000 votes in Pima County in 2020, Trump’s decision to make an early stop there hints at a strategic play for the GOP. Dave Smith, Chairman of the Pima County Republican Party, believes that Trump’s presence will not only unite but inspire voters with a new vision.
“It’s traditionally been a really blue stronghold, but now we’re seeing cracks in that, in that blue stronghold,” Smith pointed out. “I think what Trump brings to us is not only a unifying but an inspiring vision.”
With Pima County ranking #21 in the list of key counties to win in the country, the efforts to court independent voters have become crucial for narrowing the gap. Smith emphasized the importance of making a stand in the county to capitalize on the transition of independent voters leaning towards the red side.
Local elected officials, including Justine Wadsack, Republican State Senator from Legislative District 17, share this optimism, anticipating a potential swing in votes as independent voters “start to see the light.”
While Trump refrained from acknowledging his choice to hold the event in a traditionally blue county during his appearance, his supporters believe that any visit to a battleground state like Arizona injects energy into the Republican camp.
“I think we’ve seen a sea change. So it’s really hard to make a prediction when you’re in that sea change. I think it’s going to be a very tight battle,” Smith added.
