The Night the Music Stopped: A Close Call at Elks Lodge

It was a typical Saturday night at the Elks Lodge in Apache Junction, Arizona. The bar was packed, the music was playing, and everyone was having a great time. Richie Sickels, a drummer, was performing at the open mic night when tragedy struck.

As Sickels stepped outside with some friends to say goodbye, a drunk driver crashed into the building, shattering the peace and causing chaos. The truck plowed through the building, narrowly missing Sickels’ friends and sending debris flying everywhere.

Amid the chaos, Sickels and his bandmates sprang into action, rushing to help those trapped under the truck and clearing debris to free them. Thanks to their quick thinking and the efforts of emergency crews, all 30 injured victims were rescued, though a dozen were left in serious condition.

The driver, Thomas Kain, 73, was arrested on multiple charges, including DUI and aggravated assault. Investigators believe he was intoxicated when he got behind the wheel, leading to the horrific incident that could have had much deadlier consequences.

Reflecting on the night, Sickels expressed gratitude for the first responders who saved lives and relief that no one was killed. The city issued a plea for responsible driving, emphasizing the serious consequences of drunk driving on not just the driver, but everyone around them.

As the community recovers from the shock of that fateful night, it serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of planning ahead for a safe ride home after drinking. A single moment of recklessness can change everything, and it’s up to each individual to make responsible choices to keep themselves and others safe.
