The Houston Astros Defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-5
The Houston Astros continued their winning streak by defeating the struggling Arizona Diamondbacks 11-5 on Saturday. Jose Altuve and Jeremy Peña both homered in the game, with Altuve scoring three times and Peña hitting a three-run shot in the sixth inning to secure the victory.
Peña commented on the team’s performance, stating, “It’s great to put runs on the board. That’s what we try to do. I feel like whenever we’ve got a lead our pitching staff does a great job of completing the game, so that’s what we try to do — get some runs on the board and let our pitching staff do their thing.”
With this win, the Astros extended their lead in the AL West to 5 1/2 games over Seattle. On the other hand, the Diamondbacks, who have now lost three straight games and seven of their last 10, still hold a half-game edge over the New York Mets for the second National League wild card spot.
Yusei Kikuchi, the starting pitcher for the Astros, allowed four runs over six innings and recorded a career-high of 183 strikeouts this season. Despite giving up some runs, Kikuchi was satisfied with his performance, stating, “I got hit around a little bit today. But I didn’t give up a walk and kept the team in the game, so I’m happy about that.”
Eugenio Suárez hit his 25th homer for the Diamondbacks, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win as the Astros dominated the game offensively, with Yordan Alvarez finishing with three hits and a .410 batting average over his last 10 games.
Looking ahead, the Houston Astros will face off against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the final game of the series, with RHP Justin Verlander taking the mound for the Astros.
