The Stunning Aphonopelma jacobii Tarantula: A New Species Discovered in Arizona
Arizona is known for its diverse wildlife, from rattlesnakes to Gila monsters. Recently, scientists made an exciting discovery – a new species of tarantula called Aphonopelma jacobii that calls the Chiricahua Mountains in southeast Arizona home.
The journey to discovering this new tarantula began in 2018 when it was first observed in Cochise County. However, it took six more years of testing and research to confirm it as a new species. The University of Idaho team finally made the official announcement in the ZooKeys scientific journal.
Aphonopelma jacobii is a striking tarantula with a mostly black body and a vibrant orange or red abdomen. It is most active during the fall breeding season and can be found in Cave Creek Canyon, as well as high-elevation areas near Onion Saddle and Barfoot Park. It is unique in that it is the only tarantula in the Chiricahua Mountains found in high-elevation regions.
These tarantulas prefer to live in burrows near meadows and open patches of soil. However, their population is currently under threat due to various factors. Development in the San Simon Valley and Portal areas, recreational activities, wildfires, and climate change pose significant risks to the species’ survival.
The Threats Facing Aphonopelma jacobii
Scientists are concerned about the future of Aphonopelma jacobii due to several threats. Human activities like development and recreational use of the tarantula’s habitat, as well as the effects of climate change, could endanger the species. Additionally, the pet trade poses a significant risk, as these tarantulas could be captured for their unique appearance and docile nature.
Of particular concern is the population of tarantulas near Barfoot Park, an area prone to smuggling activities. Scientists fear that increased human impact in these regions could further endanger the survival of Aphonopelma jacobii.
The discovery of Aphonopelma jacobii is an exciting addition to Arizona’s rich biodiversity. However, it also highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect the unique species that call this region home.
