Phoenix Police Officer Shot in Line of Duty Released from Hospital in Latest Update on Incident
The Phoenix Police Department announced that the officer who was injured in a shooting incident on Tuesday night has been discharged from the hospital and will continue his recovery at home.
The officer, identified as Matthew Haney, a two-year veteran of the department who previously served for seven years in Northern California, requested privacy for himself and his family.
Meanwhile, another officer involved in the incident, Zane Coolidge, a five-year veteran of the department, remains in critical condition.
Both officers are field training officers certified in the Mountain View district, responsible for training new academy graduates.
The shooting took place near McDowell Road and 16th Street on Tuesday night when officers confronted Saul Bal, a 41-year-old man, during a suspected car theft incident. Bal fired at the officers, leading to the injuries.
Bal, who has a history of previous convictions, now faces attempted murder charges in connection with the shooting. He was on community supervision after serving time in prison before the incident occurred.
The community has shown strong support for the injured officers, with many displaying blue ribbons around the hospital where the officers were taken.
The Phoenix Police Foundation and the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association Charities have set up donation pages to support the officers and their families during this challenging time.
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego expressed her gratitude for the community’s support and emphasized the risks and sacrifices officers face in serving the city.
Interim Police Chief Michael Sullivan urged the community to keep both officers and their families in their thoughts and prayers.
