The Tempe City Council Unanimously Votes to Ban Brass Knuckles
Brass knuckles have become a weapon of choice in numerous assaults involving teenagers in the Valley. To combat this rising issue, the Tempe City Council has taken a stand by approving an ordinance that prohibits anyone from carrying brass knuckles outside their home.
In a landmark 7-0 vote, the Tempe City Council passed a new ordinance that not only bans teenagers from purchasing and possessing brass knuckles but also extends the ban to adults, preventing them from carrying the weapon in public. This comprehensive approach sets Tempe apart from neighboring cities like Chandler and Gilbert, making it a trailblazer in addressing the issue.
The ordinance is set to take effect 30 days following the vote, with violators facing a class one misdemeanor charge if caught with brass knuckles in public. This decision comes in response to a spate of teen violence cases, many of which involve the use of brass knuckles to inflict harm on others.
One such victim, Connor Jarnagan, shares his harrowing experience of being attacked with brass knuckles at just 16 years old. His traumatic ordeal sheds light on the dangers posed by such weapons and underscores the importance of the new ordinance in safeguarding the community.
Since the attack, Jarnagan has been a vocal advocate for stricter regulations on brass knuckles, lobbying City and State leaders to take action. His efforts have culminated in the support of the Tempe City Council, with Councilmember Berdetta Hodge spearheading the ordinance in collaboration with Jarnagan.
Hodge emphasizes the significance of including adults in the ban, citing cases where adult suspects were involved in teen assaults. By extending the ban to all individuals, regardless of age, Tempe aims to provide comprehensive protection to its residents.
Jarnagan expresses his relief at the council’s decision but emphasizes the need for further action. He plans to continue his advocacy at the State capital, urging lawmakers to implement a statewide ban on brass knuckles. Council members, including Hodge, pledge their support for Jarnagan in his quest for stricter regulations.
As the community rallies behind this important cause, it is evident that the ban on brass knuckles is a step towards a safer and more secure environment for all residents. By coming together and taking a stand against violence, Tempe sets a powerful example for other cities to follow.
