Maricopa, Ariz. – It started as a routine traffic stop, but quickly escalated into a tense standoff with the Pinal County Regional SWAT Team on Tuesday. One man, later identified as Stephen Meriwether, 31, found himself in hot water after running from officers and barricading himself inside a home.

According to the Maricopa Police Department, the incident unfolded near John Wayne Parkway and Honeycutt Avenue just before noon. Meriwether fled the scene and took refuge in a residence on Morning View Lane, where he proceeded to hide in the attic and later in an upstairs bedroom.

The SWAT team was summoned to the scene to assist with negotiations, which dragged on for over two hours. Eventually, chemical measures were employed to coax Meriwether out of the house, and he was apprehended around 6:30 p.m.

Meriwether is now facing charges for unlawful flight and will be answering to pending warrants as well.
