A concerned family member informed the police that the suspect was making suicidal statements, leading to a tragic turn of events.
CHANDLER, Ariz. — An investigation is currently ongoing after a Chandler police officer fatally shot a man who allegedly aimed a gun at officers during a mental health call.
Shortly before 9 p.m. on Thursday, Chandler police received a distress call from a home near Alma School and Elliot roads, reporting that the caller’s family member had been making suicidal statements, according to a press release from the department.
The caller disclosed that the suspect, a man in his 30s, possessed a firearm and had discharged a round in the alleyway outside the residence.
Upon arrival, an officer engaged with the caller, who informed them that he had disarmed the suspect and invited the officers inside the home. The suspect was reportedly in the garage with another family member at the time, as per police statements.
Upon entering the garage to converse with the suspect, the man purportedly drew a gun from his waistband. It was then that officers resorted to firing at the man.
Despite attempts at life-saving measures, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Fortunately, no officers sustained any harm during the altercation.
The Mesa Police Department will oversee the investigation, with the suspect’s identity being withheld from the public.
