The search and rescue mission in Grand Canyon National Park is ongoing and could extend into the weekend.
Rescue teams in Grand Canyon National Park are working tirelessly to locate a Gilbert woman who was swept away in a powerful flash flood while hiking in Havasu Canyon.
Chenoa Nickerson and her husband were caught in the fast-moving floodwaters while hiking half a mile above the Colorado River confluence. While Nickerson’s husband was rescued by rafters, she remains missing.
“We love her and we won’t give up until we find her,” expressed Nickerson’s brother, Janosh Wolters, in an emotional plea to find his sister.
Meanwhile, hundreds of stranded campers upstream are awaiting helicopter rescue as crews continue their search for Nickerson.
The recent flash flood not only affected hikers but also campers like Latricia Mimbs from Mississippi, who narrowly escaped disaster by heeding warnings and seeking higher ground.
Mimbs described the rapid change in the landscape as turquoise waterfalls turned brown, signaling impending danger. While she lost belongings, she and her group managed to evacuate safely.
Stranded individuals have been advised that a helicopter rescue is the only way to exit the area. The local Havasupai tribe is providing food and water to those awaiting evacuation.
Despite the ordeal, Mimbs remains hopeful for her fellow campers and sends her prayers for Nickerson’s safe return.
