Welcome to Trump’s Border Campaign in Arizona
Thursday’s visit is the fourth in a series of events held in battleground states this week.
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — Former President Donald Trump is making his mark in Arizona as he visits the shrub-dotted hills near the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday. This campaign focuses on immigration, a topic that has been central to Trump’s political platform since his first successful presidential bid nine years ago.
This visit is part of a series of events held in battleground states this week, strategically scheduled to draw attention away from the Democrats’ celebration of Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential nomination in Chicago. Trump’s campaign display includes a sign that reads “the southern border” placed on a dirt road between a border wall and piles of steel beams.
The theme of Thursday’s visit is “Make America Safe Again,” with Trump planning to meet with individuals whose relatives were affected by attacks or killings committed by immigrants who entered the country illegally during the Biden administration. Surrounding the area, snipers maintain an elevated position, keeping watch towards Mexico. Prior to this event, Trump held his first outdoor rally since an assassination attempt, speaking to a supportive crowd shielded by bulletproof glass.
Sheriff Mark Dannels expressed readiness to showcase the realities of law enforcement operations at the border to Trump during this visit. Dannels highlighted the challenges faced daily at the border, emphasizing the importance of discussing effective strategies and ongoing efforts to combat border crimes.
With 3,762 individuals booked into jail for border-related crimes at a cost of $12.5 million over the past 32 months in Cochise County, Dannels stressed the significance of shedding light on border issues. He hopes to convey the complexities and struggles faced by law enforcement, emphasizing a focus on public safety and quality of life within the state.
Trump and his Republican allies have criticized Democrats for spending more time focusing on him during the Democratic National Convention rather than addressing critical issues like the border and immigration. The ongoing debate between parties highlights contrasting views on immigration policies and border security.
The campaign has extended an invitation to the Harris team to visit the border as well, in an effort to engage in constructive dialogue and mutual understanding of the border challenges.
Trump’s campaign activities span across various battleground states this week, with recent visits to Pennsylvania, Michigan, and North Carolina. Events in Las Vegas and the Phoenix suburb of Glendale are also on the agenda, as Trump continues to engage with supporters and address his key campaign priorities.
