The Heartwarming Story of Mama Jo and Her New Wheels
In the bustling streets of Mesa, Arizona, a familiar figure known as Mama Jo has captured the hearts of many. Despite facing unimaginable challenges as a double amputee, Mama Jo’s resilience shines through, albeit with the help of strangers who have now become her guardian angels.
Living on the streets for years, Mama Jo’s life took a positive turn when Brock Bevell, the founder of the non-profit Fentanyl Project Arizona, shed light on her plight. After a spotlight on her story by 12News, two compassionate women stepped forward to gift Mama Jo a brand new electric wheelchair.
“It was heaven. Heaven came to me. I’ve been praying to get into an electric chair for the longest,” Mama Jo expressed her gratitude, her face beaming with joy upon receiving the thoughtful gift.
Bevell, who had initially encountered Mama Jo a year ago, recognized her urgent need for assistance. The wheelchair she had been using was more of a hindrance than help, with a metal bar underneath causing discomfort and limitations in her movement.
With the arrival of the new electric wheelchair, equipped with its very own steering wheel, Mama Jo felt a renewed sense of freedom. “I can have myself back. The first thing I did that night was I went like 10 blocks that way, and just kept going and seeing things I haven’t seen for a long time,” she shared.
Grateful for the unforeseen act of kindness, Mama Jo conveyed her thanks to Cheryl and Barbara, the two women who generously funded the wheelchair after coming across her story on 12News and TikTok.
Bevell continued his mission to uplift Mama Jo, aiming to secure a permanent home for her with the help of the City of Mesa and other non-profit organizations. Mama Jo eagerly awaits the support she urgently needs to embark on a new chapter in her life.
