América falls to Colorado Rapids in Leagues Cup quarterfinals

In a dramatic turn of events, Club América fell to the Colorado Rapids in a penalty shootout with the goalkeeper’s mistake proving costly in sudden death.

PHOENIX — Club América succumbed in a penalty shootout by a score of 9-8 against the Colorado Rapids, making it another title for the MLS teams in the Leagues Cup.

The Mexican team was the more dominant side throughout the 90 minutes but failed to score during regular time.

From the start of the match, América imposed their aggressive style of play in an attempt to break down Colorado’s solid defense.

Despite numerous chances, including a missed opportunity by Brian Rodríguez, América couldn’t find the back of the net in the first 30 minutes.

In the second half, América continued to attack relentlessly. Colorado’s goalkeeper, Zack Steffen, denied Diego Valdés’ header, keeping the score level.

Despite enjoying 60% possession, América couldn’t avoid the penalty shootout after the 90 minutes of play.

The penalty shootout extended to 20 shots, ultimately becoming a showdown between the goalkeepers.

Colorado’s goalkeeper, Zack Steffen, took a perfectly placed penalty shot, putting the pressure on América’s goalkeeper, Malagón.

Malagón’s attempt saw the Mexican goalkeeper miskick, sending the ball wide of the goal, sealing the victory for Colorado.

With this result, the Liga MX teams are left without representation in the Leagues Cup semifinals.
