Welcome back Mercury fans!
The Phoenix Mercury made a triumphant return to Phoenix after the All-Star/Olympic break with a decisive victory over the Chicago Sky.
Diana Taurasi led the charge with 23 points, including 12 in Phoenix’s highest-scoring first quarter of the season. Joining her was Sophie Cunningham, who notched her first career double-double in the WNBA with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Mercury dominated the game, leading for nearly 38 minutes on their way to an 86-68 win over the Sky.
Brittney Griner contributed 18 points to the victory, while Monique Billings, playing on a seven-day contract, added 13 points, eight rebounds, and two steals in just 23 minutes.
Taurasi’s impressive performance included hitting a pull-up 3-pointer and sparking an 11-3 run that saw the Mercury take control early on. Angel Reese put up a strong fight for Chicago with 19 points and a career-high 20 rebounds, making her the fastest player in league history to record 20 double-doubles in just 27 games.
Chennedy Carter, Kamilla Cardoso, and Isabelle Harrison also made significant contributions for the Sky, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Phoenix’s strong performance.
Phoenix’s victory marked their third win over the Sky this season, with one more game remaining in the series next month. The Mercury continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the league.
