The Final Weekend of the Olympics: Arizona Athletes to Watch
The final weekend of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, has arrived and the penultimate day of competition will be full of Arizona athletes. From the wrestling mat to the basketball court and then to the track, there will be a lot of action you won’t want to miss.
Here are all of the Arizona Olympians competing on Saturday, Aug. 10.
Basketball
Saturday will feature the final day of the men’s basketball tournament with all three medals to be handed out. Among the highlights:
- Men’s gold medal game, USA vs. France at 12:30 p.m.
- Players to watch: Kevin Durant and Devin Booker from the Phoenix Suns
- Team USA is going for their 17th gold medal in men’s basketball and fifth in a row
Soccer
The final day of soccer competition will see the women’s gold medal match featuring USA vs. Brazil at 8 a.m. One player to keep an eye on is Sydney Smith, the fiancée of Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson.
Track and Field
The final day of track and field competition in Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France will include events such as the men’s 800-meter final and the women’s marathon.
Golf
Saturday will see the final day of golf competition with the women’s final round. Expect to see athletes from ASU like Carlota Ciganda, Azahara Munoz, and Linn Grant in action.
Wrestling
Women’s Freestyle 76kg 1/8 Final will see Kennedy Alexis Blades from ASU/Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club competing. This is Blades’ first Olympics after winning gold and silver medals in previous world championships.
Water Polo
On the final day of the women’s water polo tournament, you can watch teams like Greece and Canada in the 7th place match, and Netherlands vs. USA in the bronze medal match.
Arizona Sports
Phoenix is home to major professional sports league teams like the Arizona Cardinals, Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, and Arizona Diamondbacks. It also hosts a USL soccer team, the Phoenix Rising FC.
