The Collapse of the “Double Arch” at Lake Powell
Recently, the iconic “Double Arch” feature in Rock Creek Bay at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area collapsed into the water, as confirmed by National Park Service rangers. The collapse, which occurred on Aug. 8, is believed to be a result of changing water levels and erosion.
No injuries were reported following the collapse, emphasizing the importance of protecting the mineral resources surrounding Lake Powell. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent Michelle Kerns stated, “This event serves as a reminder of our responsibility and need to protect the mineral resources.”
The Double Arch, also known as the “Toilet Bowl” and “Hole in the Roof,” was a popular attraction for visitors at Lake Powell. People would often post pictures online of themselves jumping from the arch into the water.
The arch was formed from 190-million-year-old Navajo sandstone from the late Triassic and early Jurassic periods, according to the National Park Service. It served as a unique geological feature in the area.
In light of this event, visitors are encouraged to explore and appreciate the natural beauty of Lake Powell while ensuring the preservation of its resources.
